बादशाह अकबर बीरबल से अकसर अजीब सवाल तो पूछते ही थे लेकिन एक दिन उन्होंने बीरबल को छकाने की एक तरकीब खोज निकाली। उन्होंने अपनी बेशकीमती अंगूठी छिपाकर एक सरदार को दे दी और उससे बात छुपाकर रखने के लिए कहा। जब बीरबल उनके पास आए तो बादशाह ने कहा, आज हमारी अंगूठी खो गई है। सुबह तो वह हमारे पास ही थी। शौच जाते वक्त मेंने उतार कर रखदी और जब वापस लौटा तो देखा कि अंगूठी गायब है", बीरबल चुपचाप सुनते रहे।
बादशाह ने आगे कहा, मुझे यकीन है कि यह काम महल के ही किसी व्यक्ति का हुए। बाहरी आदमी ऐसी हिम्मत नहीं कर सकता। बीरबल! तुम ज्योतिषशास्त्र बखूबी जानते हो अतः चोर का पता लगाओ।
बीरबल ने उस जगह का पता पूछा जहां उन्होंने शौच जाने से पहले अंगूठी रखी थी।
बादशाह अकबर ने एक अलमारी की ओर इशारा किया। बीरबल ने उस अलमारी के पास जाकर उससे कान लगाकर कुछ देर बाद हटा लेने का नाटक किया। देखने से यह लगता था जैसे वह कोई बात सुनने की कोशिश कर रहा है।
कुछ देर बाद बीरबल ने बादशाह की तरफ देखकर कहा, अलमारी साफ़ बताती है कि जिसके पास अंगूठी है, उसकी दाढी में तिनका है। बीरबल की बात को जब पास ही बैठे सरदार ने सुना, जिसको बादशाह ने अंगूठी दी थी, तो यह घबराकर अपना मुंह और दाढ़ी टटोलने लगा। बीरबल पहले से ही चौकन्ने थे। सरदार की हरकत उनसे छिपी नहीं रह सकी। फौरन ही बीरबल ने उस सरदार को पकडकर बादशाह के सामने पेश किया और कहा, जहांपनाह, आपकी अंगूठी के चोर यही हैं यह बात बादशाह पहले से ही जानते थे। वह बीरबल की इस चतुराई से बेहद खुश हुए।

Emperor Akbar pointed to a wardrobe. Birbal went to the closet and pretended to take him off after sometime. From seeing, it seemed like he was trying to hear something.
After some time, Birbal looked at the king and said, the cupboard clearly tells that the person who has a ring has a straw in his beard. When Birbal talked to the Sardar sitting nearby, whom the King had given the ring, it started frightening his mouth and beard. Birbal was already alert. Sardar's move could not be hidden from them. Immediately Birbal caught the Sardar and presented him to the king and said, "Jupiter, the thieves of your ring are the same, the king knew this thing already." He was very happy with this cleverness of Birbal.
