शेखचिल्ली के बारे में यही कहा जाता है कि उसका जन्म किसी गांव में एक गरीब शेख परिवार में हुआ था। पिता बचपन में ही गुजर गए थे, मां ने पाल-पोस कर बड़ा किया। मां सोचती थी कि एक दिन बेटा बड़ा होकर कमाएगा तो गरीबी दूर होगी।
उसने बेटे को पढ़ने के लिए मदरसे में दाखिला दिला दिया। सब बच्चे उसे 'शेख' कहा करते थे। मौलवी साहब ने पढ़ाया, लड़का है तो 'खाता' है और लड़की है तो 'खाती' है । जैसे रहमान जा रहा है, रजिया जा रही है।
एक दिन एक लड़की कुएं में गिर पड़ी। वह मदद के लिए चिल्ला रही थी। शेख दौड़कर साथियों के पास आया और बोला वह मदद के लिए चिल्ली रही है। पहले तो लड़के समझे नहीं। फिर शेखचिल्ली उन्हें कुएं पर ले गया। उन्होंने लड़की को बाहर निकाला। वह रो रही थी। शेख बार-बार समझा रहा था- 'देखो, कैसे चिल्ली रही है। ठीक हो जाएगी।

लड़कों ने शेख की मूर्खता समझ ली और उसे 'चिल्ली-चिल्ली' कहकर चिढ़ाने लगे।
उसका तो फिर नाम ही 'शेखचिल्ली हो गया।

Someone asked- 'Sheikh! Why are you saying 'chilly-chilli' repeatedly?
She said, 'If you are a girl, then you will say' chili '. If there were a boy then do not scream saying.
The boys understood Shaikh's folly and started teasing by calling him 'Chili-Chili'.
Then the name itself became 'Shekhchilli'.
